Dayhike: Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

Went for a quick dayhike around Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. It was about a 6-mile hike. 3 miles in, 3 miles back. Give or take. My favorite place to go rambling through the woods (when it isn’t hunting season). These are just some random spliced shots filmed with a Flip video camera anchored to my backpack strap using a Gorillapod tripod.

Wanted to test out my new bag, a Spec Ops T.H.E. backpack, which I reviewed here. Also wanted to practice setting up another tarp shelter.

Total pack weight couldn’t have been more than 20 or 25 pounds, which included:

* Two 8″x6″ tarps (.5 mil) and 8 tent stakes
* Two 50-foot lengths of paracord and other miscellaneous cordage
* Leatherman Wingman multi-tool
* Ontario Air Force survival knife
* Tri-fold shovel
* First-aid kit
* Fire-starting kit
* Stainless steel 1-liter(?) water bottle
* Half-gallon of water (which I didn’t use)
* Snugpak jungle bag
* Electronics gear (Flip video, digital camera, GPS receiver, cell phone)
* Gorillapod tripod
* Full-length tripod
* Compass
* Back up pair of eye glasses
* Two pairs of gardening gloves
* Small notebook and a few pens/pencils
* Wallet/ID
* House and car keys
* Lunch was a tortilla sandwich made with hummus, salami, and swiss cheese

Spec Ops T.H.E. Pack: The perfect travel bag?

Review of the Spec Ops T.H.E. Pack. T.H.E. stands for “tactical holds everything” (and probably a lot more!).

Designed primarily for military/tactical and outdoor use, this backpack might very well be the perfect travel bag. Sized perfectly to fit in the overhead compartment on a plane. Solid material. Excellent craftsmanship. I hope to get many years of use out of this bag.
